08/29/05 - Golden State Open

With Marti Malloy (63kg) and Sean Lang (66kg) leading the way with gold medals, the SJSU Judo Team placed second overall with only a handful of young players, including several new freshmen. The team showed great poise and determination as they battled it out in over 100-degree heat.

Silver medals were won by Tomoyo Yoshinaga at 70kg, David Torres at 73kg, Davor Vasiljevic at 81kg and Shingo Katsura at 90kg.

The road warrior of the day was Andy Hung (90kg) as he battled each and every one of his matches to the bitter end, even though he came up just a bit shy of the podium with a 4th place finish.

Saddly enough, at 73kg, Louie Hung, Takeshi Young and Kento Takahashi were forced to eliminate one another before reaching the podium. Ming Ling, Mark Vokoeper, Atsushi Yoshinaga and Jared Higashi all fought as well, but eventually fell victim to a few key mistakes.

Overall the event was a great building block for the team that will give everybody more fuel for the coming season.
