San Jose State Judo - New Website
Gary Newquist, Executive Committee member
Chuck Jefferson, Judo Team Coach
www.sjsujudo.org -
plain and simple, check it out!
Over the past five years
the Judo Executive Committee has communicated with our alumni and friends
with a published newsletter. We now have created a new website that will
allow you, our alumni and friends, access 24/7 to current events on a
timely basis.
Ali Moghadas, a graduate and former coach at SJSU, created and donated a
professional video of SJSU Judo which will premier on our new website.
Thank you Ali! You will now be able to see team pictures, historical
pictures, financial information, team and player statistics, updates on
tournaments, fund raising activity and what's new with alumni all from
your computer.
Coach Chuck Jefferson and Gary Newquist will coordinate website updates
with Dick Norona and the Executive Committee.
Your Contributions Support SJSU 2004
Olympic Judo Team Hopefuls
Dick Norona, Executive Committee Director
Chuck Jefferson, Judo Team Coach
Thank you for continuing your support of SJSU Judo. Over the last year
SJSU Judo has received contributions from our esteemed Alumni, the Annual
Gold Tournament, earnings on the SJSU Judo Endowment and allocations from
the SJSJU Associated Students.
Since 1999, when Head Coach Yosh Uchida asked the Executive Committee to
put in place a long-term plan for SJSU Judo, the team has been self-funded.
Annually we have published the financial information in newsletters. In the
future, these reports will be updated on the new SJSU website.
2004 is a critical year for the SJSU Judo Team as we prepare for the 2004
Olympic Trials and the Olympics.
The U.S. Trials will consist of the top 5 indivisuals in each of the 7
Olympic weight categories for both men and women. Thus far, Chuck Jefferson
(73kg), Jose Bencosme (73kg), Tetsu Okano (81kg), Mike Barnes (100kg), John
Serbin (100kg plus), and Heidi Bartkowski (63kg) have secured their spots to
compete in the Trials.
The U.S. Olympic Trials will be held at San Jose State on June 5th, 2004. |

2004 Collegiate National Tournament
Report:
At the start of the year, the coaching staff knew we had our work
cut out for us. Quiet a few players had finished college eligibility
last year, and several people on the team were waiting for in-state
residency before becomming full-time students. Things only became
more difficult when several players had to sit out due to injury.
We went into this year's College National Championships trying to
defend out National title with a team of only 4 men and 1 woman.
At 60kg, Freshman Matt Dias had a great day finishing with a Silver
medal. In the 73kg category, SJSU had two players, Trevor Mallo with
a 6-2 record taking 4th place and Takeshi Young finishing in 2nd place
with a 4-1 record. Andy Hung, at 81kg, went 3-2 to finish 5th place.
All four members on the SJSU men's National team were Freshmen.
Heidi Bartkowski, SJSU Junior, went 3-1 for a third place finish in the
women's competition.
San Jose took second place overall in the team standing, behind
Cumberland College by only 1 point. This was the first time since the
mid 1980's that SJSU did not walk away with the Team Title. However,
the performances of our young players are an insight into the future
success of SJSU Judo. These players are the future of our program. We
are expecting a good sized Freshman class next fall and look forward to
having a full compliment of players at next year's tournament.
This year's second place finish serves as motivation for both the
players and the coaches to rebuild and strengthen our team so we can
regain our National Title next year as SJSU Judo hosts the 2005 College
National Championships.
Judo Team News and Notes:
Welcome back Eitan Gelber. Eitan is back SJSU helping with the
team training program.
SJSU will miss Tamo Kitaura-- Coach at Pal Alto Judo Club. A
long time friend to SJSU Judo, Tamo passed away in 2003. Thank you
Tamo for over 50 years of help to SJSU Judo.
Keio University visited SJSU in February celebrating a 40 year
history of friendship and support. It was great to see Michi
Sengoku, who was a member of the first team that came to SJSU 40 years
ago.
We also wish to extend appreciation and thanks to the following friends
of SJSU Judo:
Dr. Bob Nishime - Judo Team Physician.
Gayle Norona - Many hours of administrative work to make Dick
Norona look good.
Steve Constantine - SJSU Foundation.
